BASIC SCRAMBLE RULES:

  • Two or four golfers play on a team

  • Each team member hits a tee shot at every hole

  • The team collectively decide which ball is in the best position

  • They mark this spot with a tee or a coin

  • The players retrieve their balls and play from the marker

  • The procedure repeats until someone sinks a ball into the hole

Only the best-scoring ball counts toward the team's score for the hole. To determine a winner, the scores for the holes are added together, and the team with the lowest total score wins.

Additionally, some more specific rules may apply to the game. These include:

Ball Placement

On the green, each team member must place the ball within one club length of the chosen shot, as long as this does not move it closer to the hole.

If the selected shot is in the primary or secondary rough, or on the fairway, the ball must be placed in that same relative part of the course, i.e., from the same grass length. Players may improve the lie of the shot by placing the ball by hand or moving it with the club head.

On the putting green, team members may place the ball (by hand) within four inches of the selected shot on either side, but no closer to the hole. The ball is in play when the player addresses it or makes his next stroke.

Playing the Ball

When any member plays the ball from a position where it came to rest, that is considered a selection shot. Team members may stand behind one another while hitting a shot or putting.
